VinFast is taking its next major step towards entering India’s electric two-wheeler space by inviting applications from businesses interested in joining its upcoming electric motorcycle and scooter dealer network.
The latest initiative indicates that the Vietnamese EV maker is moving closer to launching its two-wheeler operations in the country. Along with developing products and preparing manufacturing capabilities, VinFast is now working on the sales, service and distribution infrastructure needed to support its future electric two-wheeler range.
VinFast India E-Motorcycle has invited interested businesses to apply for dealership opportunities, with applications open until September 15, 2026.
The development comes after VinFast had announced its intention to enter India’s electric two-wheeler segment in the second half of 2026. The company has said that its initial products will include electric scooters developed specifically with Indian customers in mind.
Dealer Expansion Signals a Step Closer to Launch
Building a dealership network is an important part of preparing for a new vehicle launch, particularly when a manufacturer plans to establish a long-term presence in a market.
For VinFast, the recruitment drive suggests that its Indian electric two-wheeler programme has moved beyond the planning stage and is progressing towards market introduction.
The company has not yet revealed the exact launch date, prices or the complete list of models planned for India. However, having dealerships in place will be essential if VinFast wants to build sales volumes and provide customers with accessible service support.
In India’s electric scooter market, factors such as after-sales service, spare-parts availability, financing and showroom reach are becoming increasingly important alongside product range, performance and pricing.
VinFast has already begun developing a retail ecosystem for its electric passenger vehicles in India. In July 2025, the company announced partnerships with 13 dealer groups covering 32 dealerships across 27 cities. These outlets were planned around a 3S — sales, service and spares — format.
The two-wheeler business could require a substantially larger network as scooters typically address a broader consumer base and demand wider geographic availability.
India-Specific Electric Scooters Will Lead the Two-Wheeler Push
VinFast has indicated that its Indian two-wheeler strategy will begin with electric scooters created specifically for the domestic market.
Earlier in 2026, VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau confirmed that the company was targeting the second half of 2026 for its entry into India’s electric two-wheeler segment.
The company is also preparing a dedicated two-wheeler manufacturing line at its Tamil Nadu facility. The long-term production ambition for the operation stands at one million electric two-wheelers annually.
Such a target indicates that VinFast sees the Indian two-wheeler market as a major opportunity rather than a small addition to its existing electric passenger vehicle operations.
If the company reaches the planned scale, electric scooters and motorcycles could eventually represent a significant part of VinFast’s overall India business.
VinFast Viper Patent Offers a Clue About Future Products
VinFast has not officially confirmed the complete India model lineup, but its intellectual-property filings provide some indications of the products it could potentially introduce.
The company has secured an Indian design patent for the VinFast Viper electric scooter.
An electric motorcycle design that appears to be linked to the Sulad concept showcased in international markets has also been patented in India.
Patent registrations alone do not confirm that these vehicles will be launched commercially. Nevertheless, they suggest that VinFast could be considering multiple products for the Indian market instead of relying on a single scooter.
The company already sells a range of electric scooters in Southeast Asian markets. This gives it an existing product and technology base that can potentially be adapted for Indian requirements.
However, the specifications of international models should not automatically be considered representative of the India-bound products. Final battery capacities, range, equipment and pricing are yet to be announced.
Thoothukudi Facility Set for Wider EV Production
VinFast’s two-wheeler plans are part of a much larger manufacturing expansion underway in Tamil Nadu.
The company and the Tamil Nadu government have signed an MoU for approximately 200 hectares, equivalent to around 500 acres, of additional land next to VinFast’s existing manufacturing facility at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi.
The proposed expansion is expected to support additional EV-related activities, including production of electric scooters, electric buses and charging infrastructure.
VinFast inaugurated its first Indian manufacturing plant in Thoothukudi in August 2025. Spread across roughly 400 acres, the facility became the company’s first operational manufacturing plant outside Vietnam.
The original facility began with an annual production capacity of approximately 50,000 electric vehicles, with future expansion plans aimed at significantly increasing overall output.
The dealer recruitment drive can therefore be viewed as one part of a broader India strategy involving manufacturing expansion, localisation, supplier development and distribution.
VinFast Faces a More Competitive Electric Two-Wheeler Market
VinFast is entering the Indian electric two-wheeler market at a considerably more competitive stage than it would have encountered several years ago.
Electric two-wheelers have expanded rapidly across the country. Around 1.75 lakh electric two-wheelers were registered in India in August 2026, while registrations between January and August were nearly 60% higher year-on-year, based on industry data reported by ETAuto.
The competitive landscape has also changed significantly.
TVS Motor and Bajaj Auto together accounted for close to half of the market during August, while Ather Energy continued to strengthen its market position.
Provisional registration data for August 1-26 indicated approximately 27.5% share for TVS, 22.8% for Bajaj and around 16% for Ather.
VinFast will consequently be entering a market where customers already have access to established electric scooter brands and products, including:
- TVS iQube
- Bajaj Chetak
- Ather Rizta and Konarc
- Hero Vida
- Ola Electric S1 range
Japanese manufacturers are also gradually increasing their presence in India’s electric two-wheeler segment.
As a result, VinFast will need to compete on more than just vehicle specifications. Product pricing, range, charging convenience, service support, dealer reach and brand confidence could all play an important role in determining its success.
Retail and Service Infrastructure Could Give VinFast an Edge
VinFast’s decision to build a conventional dealership network is particularly noteworthy given how quickly India’s EV retail landscape is evolving.
As electric two-wheelers move beyond early adopters and become a mainstream mobility option, consumers are increasingly looking for convenient access to service centres, spare parts and physical sales outlets.
Ola Electric, for example, initially relied heavily on a company-controlled retail approach but has since expanded into dealer-operated outlets and is targeting a network of more than 500 locations.
VinFast’s strategy of developing dealership and service infrastructure alongside its product launch could therefore help address one of the key concerns associated with newer automotive brands — confidence in long-term ownership and after-sales support.
The company has also taken steps to strengthen the financial ecosystem around its passenger vehicle dealers. Its partnership with Federal Bank provides inventory financing solutions to authorised dealerships, highlighting the wider effort to establish a structured retail network in India.
Electric Two-Wheelers Could Broaden VinFast’s India Footprint
VinFast’s India ambitions are increasingly extending beyond electric passenger cars.
The company is now looking at a broader EV ecosystem that could include electric scooters, motorcycles, buses, charging infrastructure and mobility-related services.
This expansion would allow VinFast to address multiple segments of India’s rapidly developing electric mobility market while increasing the level of localisation of its operations.
The company has repeatedly highlighted India’s importance to its long-term manufacturing strategy and has indicated plans to increase localisation and develop vehicles specifically suited to Indian consumers.
The electric two-wheeler dealer recruitment programme represents another tangible step in that direction.
What to Expect From VinFast Next
The September 15, 2026 deadline for electric two-wheeler dealership applications is now the immediate milestone in VinFast’s India plans.
Following the dealer selection process, attention is likely to shift towards the company’s first major two-wheeler announcements, including:
- the cities where its initial dealerships will be established;
- confirmation of the first India-specific electric scooter;
- start of production on the dedicated two-wheeler line;
- battery specifications and certified range;
- charging options and infrastructure;
- level of local component sourcing;
- introductory pricing; and
- the final commercial launch date.
With VinFast now actively looking for electric two-wheeler dealers, its entry into India’s scooter market appears to be moving closer to reality.
