Bengaluru strengthened its position as Karnataka’s largest contributor to electric vehicle adoption in August 2026, with the city accounting for more than half of the state’s EV registrations. Electric vehicles also formed a notable share of Bengaluru’s overall new vehicle registrations during the month.
The city recorded 13,389 electric vehicle registrations in August, based on Karnataka transport department data reported by The Times of India. During the same period, Bengaluru registered 76,508 vehicles in total.
This put EVs at 17.5% of the city’s new vehicle registrations, meaning approximately one out of every six vehicles registered in Bengaluru during August was electric.
Bengaluru Contributes More Than Half of Karnataka’s EV Registrations
The city’s contribution becomes more significant when compared with the state-level numbers.
Karnataka recorded 26,636 electric vehicle registrations in August 2026, of which Bengaluru accounted for 13,389 units. This translates to approximately 50.3% of the state’s total EV registrations for the month.
The figures underline Bengaluru’s substantial role in Karnataka’s ongoing transition towards electric mobility. While EV adoption is expanding across the state, the capital continues to account for a large proportion of new electric vehicle registrations.
The August data also shows the difference between Bengaluru’s overall vehicle market and its EV adoption rate: 17.5% of new registrations were electric during the month, while the city alone contributed just over half of Karnataka’s monthly EV registrations.
With registrations continuing to build, upcoming monthly data will provide a clearer picture of whether Bengaluru can sustain this level of contribution to Karnataka’s growing EV market.
