Tata Motors Leads as Mahindra Strengthens Its Position

Tata Motors remained India’s largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer, recording 14,792 registrations in September 2026. Its volumes more than doubled from 7,369 units in the corresponding month last year, delivering 100.7% annual growth. Compared with August’s 13,825 registrations, the company posted a further 7.0% increase.

Tata Motors held 42.2% of the market, up from 41.1% in September 2025. The 1.1 percentage point improvement reflects its continued strength in the electric passenger vehicle segment.

Mahindra secured second place with 7,782 registrations, compared with 3,973 units a year earlier. This represented 95.9% year-on-year growth, while registrations increased 14.0% from August’s 6,827 units. The automaker maintained a 22.2% market share, matching its share in September 2025.

Combined, Tata Motors and Mahindra accounted for approximately 64.4% of India’s electric passenger vehicle registrations in September, underlining the concentration of sales among the two leading manufacturers.

MG Holds Third Place Despite a Lower Market Share

MG ranked third with 5,242 electric vehicle registrations during September 2026. Its volumes grew 9.1% from 4,803 units in September 2025 and improved 6.3% over the 4,933 registrations recorded in August.

However, MG’s market share fell to 15.0% from 26.8% a year earlier, a decline of 11.8 percentage points. While the company continued to increase its sales, its growth rate was considerably below the overall market’s 95.4% expansion.

VinFast Records a Sharp Increase in Registrations

VinFast secured fourth position after registering 2,964 electric cars in September 2026. The manufacturer had recorded only six units in September 2025, resulting in an exceptionally high reported year-on-year growth rate of 49,300%. This increase should be viewed in the context of the very low base in the previous year.

The company also recorded strong sequential progress, with registrations climbing from 2,239 units in August to 2,964 units in September, an increase of 32.4% month-on-month. VinFast accounted for 8.5% of the market during the month.

Kia and BYD Post Strong Monthly Gains

Kia registered 1,263 electric cars in September, compared with 598 units in September 2025. The manufacturer achieved 111.2% year-on-year growth, while monthly registrations jumped 48.4% from August’s 851 units. Its market share stood at 3.6%, compared with 3.3% a year earlier.

BYD recorded 836 registrations during the month, up from 732 units in September 2025, translating into 14.2% annual growth. Its performance improved significantly over August, when it registered 567 vehicles, resulting in a 47.4% month-on-month increase. Despite the higher volumes, BYD’s market share was 2.4%, down from 4.1% in September 2025.

Maruti Suzuki Sees a Monthly Decline

Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,104 electric vehicle registrations in September 2026, representing a 3.1% share of the market. The supplied data shows no registrations for September 2025, so a meaningful year-on-year growth rate cannot be calculated from these figures.

On a month-on-month basis, registrations declined from 1,472 units in August to 1,104 units in September, marking a 25.0% decrease. Maruti Suzuki was among the manufacturers to record a sequential drop despite the broader market’s growth.

Hyundai Registers Annual Growth but Slips Month-on-Month

Hyundai reported 792 electric car registrations in September 2026, nearly twice its September 2025 volume of 404 units. This represented 96.0% year-on-year growth.

However, the company’s registrations fell 5.7% from 840 units in August. Hyundai accounted for 2.3% of total electric passenger vehicle registrations during September.

Toyota and Citroen Record Smaller Volumes

Toyota registered 218 electric cars in September 2026, compared with 168 units in August. The 29.8% month-on-month increase gave the manufacturer a 0.6% market share. As the supplied September 2025 data lists zero registrations, a year-on-year growth rate is not available.

Citroen recorded 55 registrations, up from 47 units in both September 2025 and August 2026. This translated into 17.0% growth on both a year-on-year and month-on-month basis. The manufacturer held a 0.2% share of the market.

Outlook: Electric Passenger Vehicle Market Maintains Strong Momentum

September 2026 proved to be a strong month for India’s electric passenger vehicle industry, with registrations approaching twice the year-earlier level. Tata Motors continued to lead the market, while Mahindra consolidated its second-place position. Together, the two manufacturers accounted for nearly two-thirds of all registrations.

VinFast’s growing volumes and the sharp monthly gains recorded by Kia and BYD added to the month’s highlights. At the same time, MG’s declining market share, along with lower monthly registrations for Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai, showed that market growth was not uniform across manufacturers.

With total registrations reaching 35,048 units, up 95.4% year-on-year and 10.3% month-on-month, the September figures point to sustained expansion in India’s electric passenger vehicle market, even as individual manufacturers experienced differing sales trends.
