Mahindra XUV 7XO Gets 5-Star Bharat NCAP Rating for Adult and Child Safety

The Mahindra XUV 7XO has achieved a five-star safety rating in both adult and child occupant protection under the latest Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) evaluations.

The three-row SUV recorded 30.76 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and 44.97 out of 49 points for Child Occupant Protection (COP). The results place the XUV 7XO among the better-performing internal-combustion SUVs tested under the programme.

Excellent performance in side-impact testing

The XUV 7XO delivered a particularly strong performance in the side movable deformable barrier test, achieving the maximum 16/16 points. Protection across the evaluated body areas was rated good.

The SUV also demonstrated good protection in the side pole-impact assessment.

In the frontal offset test, the XUV 7XO scored 14.76/16. The driver’s and front passenger’s head and neck protection was rated good. The front passenger also received a good chest-protection assessment, while the driver’s chest protection was rated adequate.

Most of the lower-body areas received good protection, although the driver’s shin protection was assessed as adequate.

Child Safety Performance Nearly Perfect

The XUV 7XO’s performance in child occupant protection was another major highlight.

During the dynamic child tests, the SUV scored 23.97 out of 24 points, coming very close to a perfect score.

It further achieved:

  • 12/12 for child-restraint-system installation
  • 9/13 in the vehicle assessment
  • 44.97/49 overall for child occupant protection

The results indicate that compatible child restraints can be securely installed at the specified seating positions. Parents should nevertheless select and install child seats according to the child’s age, height and weight requirements.

Bharat NCAP-Tested XUV 7XO Variants

For the crash evaluation, Bharat NCAP tested the AX7 diesel seven-seat automatic and AX7L diesel seven-seat automatic with 4WD.

The certification, however, applies to a broader set of petrol and diesel configurations covered by Bharat NCAP’s assessment criteria. It is therefore not limited only to the two vehicles that underwent the physical crash tests.

Safety Features Offered by the XUV 7XO

The tested XUV 7XO vehicles were equipped with a comprehensive range of passive and active safety equipment, including:

  • Front airbags
  • Head-curtain airbags
  • Side airbags for chest and pelvis protection
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Seatbelt pretensioners
  • Seatbelt load limiters
  • Seatbelt reminders
  • ISOFIX child-seat mounts

Mahindra offers six airbags as standard on the XUV 7XO. Certain higher-spec versions get a seventh airbag, along with curtain-airbag coverage extending to the third row.

Higher variants also feature technologies such as Level 2 ADAS and a 540-degree camera system, adding further driver-assistance capabilities to the SUV’s safety package.

XUV 7XO vs XUV700: What Has Improved?

The previous-generation Mahindra XUV700 had already established a strong safety record, earning a five-star adult occupant protection rating and a four-star child occupant protection rating under an earlier Global NCAP testing protocol.

The XUV 7XO has now achieved five stars in both adult and child occupant protection under Bharat NCAP, marking an improvement in the child-safety rating.

However, the two results should not be directly compared purely on the basis of their numerical scores. The XUV700 and XUV 7XO were assessed under different testing programmes and protocols, with different evaluation methodologies.

Verdict

The Bharat NCAP result strengthens the Mahindra XUV 7XO’s safety credentials, particularly with its five-star ratings for both adults and children. Its near-perfect child dynamic score and full marks in the side movable barrier test stand out among the assessment results.

With multiple airbags, electronic safety systems, ISOFIX mounts and advanced driver-assistance features on higher variants, the XUV 7XO combines its three-row practicality with a comprehensive safety package.
