Best-Selling Sub-4m SUVs in August 2026: Tata Punch Takes the Lead as Segment Grows 41%

India’s sub-4-metre SUV market witnessed a significant jump in demand in August 2026, with total sales reaching 1,21,391 units. In comparison, the segment recorded 86,169 units in August 2025, resulting in a strong 40.9% year-on-year increase.

The Tata Punch emerged as the segment’s best-selling SUV, followed by the Maruti Suzuki Fronx and Tata Nexon. While the market saw broad-based growth across most models, a few SUVs stood out with particularly strong year-on-year gains.

Tata Punch Tops the Segment

The Tata Punch finished August 2026 at the top of the sub-4m SUV sales chart. Tata sold 21,320 units, compared with 10,704 units in August 2025.

This represents an impressive 99.2% YoY increase, taking the Punch’s contribution to 17.6% of total segment sales. Its near-doubling of annual volumes helped it establish a clear lead over the other SUVs in the category.

Fronx and Nexon Close Behind

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx secured second place with 18,730 units in August 2026. Its sales were up from 12,422 units during the same month last year, translating into 50.8% YoY growth.

With 15.4% of the segment, the Fronx remained one of the strongest performers in the market.

The Tata Nexon was just behind, recording 18,431 units. Compared with 14,004 units in August 2025, the Nexon registered 31.6% annual growth and accounted for 15.2% of total sub-4m SUV sales.

Brezza Maintains a Strong Position

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza continued to rank among the segment’s top sellers, registering 15,288 units in August 2026.

Its sales increased from 13,620 units a year earlier, representing a 12.2% YoY rise. The Brezza contributed 12.6% to overall sub-4m SUV volumes.

Venue Records 40% Growth

Hyundai’s Venue occupied the fifth position with 11,365 units sold in August 2026. The model had registered 8,109 units in August 2025.

With volumes climbing by 40.2% YoY, the Venue accounted for 9.4% of the segment and remained one of Hyundai’s strongest performers in the category.

The Kia Sonet followed with 9,048 units, compared with 7,741 units in the previous year’s corresponding month. The Sonet posted 16.9% growth and held a 7.5% segment share.

Mahindra 3XO and Hyundai Exter Post Strong Gains

The Mahindra 3XO delivered another notable year-on-year improvement. Sales climbed from 5,521 units in August 2025 to 8,302 units in August 2026, resulting in 50.4% growth.

The model held a 6.8% share of the sub-4m SUV market.

The Hyundai Exter also recorded substantial growth during the month. Its sales rose to 8,157 units from 5,061 units a year earlier.

That translates into a 61.2% YoY increase, giving the Exter a 6.7% share of the segment.

Kylaq and Taisor See Moderate Growth

The Skoda Kylaq registered 3,590 units in August 2026, compared with 3,099 units during August 2025. The SUV therefore recorded 15.8% year-on-year growth and held a 3.0% share of the segment.

The Toyota Taisor posted 2,863 units, up from 2,683 units a year ago. Its volumes increased by 6.7% YoY, giving it a 2.4% segment share.

Kia Syros Records the Highest Growth Rate

One of the biggest percentage gains came from the Kia Syros. The model’s sales jumped from just 308 units in August 2025 to 1,742 units in August 2026.

This represents an exceptional 465.6% YoY increase. Despite the sharp growth rate, the Syros still accounted for only 1.4% of overall sub-4m SUV sales.

The Nissan Magnite recorded 1,495 units, compared with 1,384 units in August 2025. Its sales increased by 8.0% YoY.

Jimny and Kiger Remain in Decline

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny was among the few models to record a year-on-year decline. Sales fell marginally from 603 units to 586 units, representing a 2.8% drop. The model held a 0.5% share of the segment.

The Renault Kiger experienced a sharper decline. Its sales dropped from 910 units in August 2025 to 474 units in August 2026, marking a 47.9% YoY fall. Its contribution to the segment stood at just 0.4%.

Sub-4m SUV Market Expands Sharply

Overall, the August 2026 sales numbers point to strong momentum in India’s sub-4m SUV space. With 1,21,391 units sold, the segment expanded by 40.9% compared with August 2025.

The Tata Punch led the market with a 17.6% share, while the Fronx and Nexon remained close behind. Strong growth from models such as the Punch, Exter, 3XO, Fronx and Syros further highlights the rising demand across the segment.

At the same time, the performance gap between individual models remains significant, with some SUVs recording substantial annual growth while others continue to face declining volumes.
