Kia Sorento Deliveries Commence in India as First Customers Receive the New Flagship SUV

Kia India has officially begun handing over the new Sorento to customers, marking the start of deliveries shortly after the premium three-row SUV made its debut in the Indian market. The first units have started reaching buyers through Kia dealerships, signalling the beginning of the SUV’s retail journey in the country.

The Sorento was introduced in India earlier this month with a starting price of ₹27.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned as Kia’s flagship internal-combustion SUV in India, it also marks an important milestone for the brand by bringing its first strong-hybrid passenger vehicle to the domestic market.

Sorento Moves From Launch to Customer Deliveries

Kia has already commenced production of the Sorento at its Anantapur manufacturing facility in Andhra Pradesh, allowing the company to transition quickly from the vehicle’s market launch to customer deliveries.

Local production began on August 20, ahead of the SUV’s September 4 market introduction. Manufacturing the Sorento in India is expected to support availability and gives Kia greater flexibility in positioning the model compared with a completely imported vehicle.

With deliveries now underway, customers will begin encountering the Sorento on Indian roads, rather than seeing it only at dealerships and launch events.

The model also takes Kia into a considerably higher price bracket than its more volume-oriented products such as the Sonet, Seltos and Carens.

Sorento Pricing and Positioning

The new Kia Sorento starts at ₹27.99 lakh ex-showroom in India.

The strong-hybrid variant starts at around ₹29.49 lakh ex-showroom, depending on the configuration.

This pricing places the Sorento in an interesting part of the premium SUV market. Its lower variants overlap with the upper versions of several mainstream three-row SUVs, while the model remains positioned below some of the more expensive traditional premium full-size SUVs.

Two Engine Options: Hybrid and Diesel

Kia is offering the Sorento with both strong-hybrid and diesel powertrains, giving buyers two distinctly different propulsion choices.

The hybrid setup combines a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor. The petrol engine produces approximately 180PS and 265Nm, making the Sorento Kia’s first hybrid passenger vehicle in India.

A 2.2-litre diesel engine is also available. This option is likely to appeal to buyers who regularly cover long highway distances or continue to prefer the characteristics of a diesel-powered large SUV.

The two-engine strategy allows Kia to cater to both customers looking for greater electrification and efficiency and those who still prefer a conventional diesel powertrain for their premium SUV.

Hybrid Sorento Gets All-Wheel Drive

Another notable feature of the Sorento hybrid is the availability of all-wheel drive.

While the majority of owners are expected to use the SUV primarily for urban commuting and highway travel, AWD provides additional capability for customers who want greater confidence across different road surfaces and weather conditions.

It also adds to the Sorento’s appeal as a premium family SUV designed for both everyday use and longer journeys.

Premium Interior Packed With Technology

Kia has equipped the Sorento with a comprehensive list of features, continuing the brand’s focus on technology-rich cabins.

Depending on the variant, the SUV can be equipped with:

  • Dual digital displays
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Ventilated seats
  • Powered tailgate
  • 360-degree surround-view camera
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
  • Multiple parking sensors and radar-based safety functions
  • Connected-car technology

The India-specification Sorento also introduces Kia’s AI-based assistant, highlighting the importance of the Indian market in the company’s rollout of this technology.

The combination of three-row practicality, premium equipment and multiple powertrain options will be central to Kia’s strategy for the Sorento.

Competition in the Premium SUV Segment

The Sorento enters a competitive part of India’s SUV market, where buyers can consider models such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian, MG Gloster/Majestor and Volkswagen Tayron, depending on the variant and price range.

However, Kia is taking a somewhat different approach with the Sorento.

Instead of relying solely on a large conventional petrol or diesel engine, the company is combining a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol strong-hybrid system, extensive technology and a premium three-row cabin.

Its ₹27.99 lakh starting price also gives Kia an opportunity to attract customers considering fully loaded versions of SUVs positioned below the traditional ₹40 lakh premium SUV segment.

Local Manufacturing Supports Kia’s Strategy

Manufacturing the Sorento in India could become an important part of Kia’s strategy for the model.

The first locally produced unit rolled off the Anantapur production line on August 20, 2026, roughly two weeks before the SUV was officially launched in the market.

Beginning production ahead of the launch allowed Kia to prepare initial inventory, which is now making its way through the company’s dealership network to customers.

With deliveries now underway, the focus will shift towards how the Sorento performs in the market. The coming weeks should offer a better indication of customer response as more dealerships conduct test drives and potential buyers get the opportunity to experience Kia’s new flagship SUV.
