Tata Continues to Account for the Largest Share
Tata Motors dispatched 16,042 electric cars in August 2026, compared with 8,292 units during the same month last year.
The increase of 93.5% YoY helped Tata maintain a sizeable lead, with the manufacturer accounting for 43.8% of total electric passenger vehicle dispatches during the month.
Mahindra Records Triple-Digit Growth
Mahindra & Mahindra registered 8,313 EVs, more than twice its August 2025 figure of 3,930 units.
With volumes increasing by 111.5% YoY, Mahindra held 22.7% of the market and remained the second-largest manufacturer in the August rankings.
The combined volumes of Tata and Mahindra amounted to 24,355 units, representing 66.6% of total electric car dispatches for the month.
MG Remains in Third Despite Lower Volumes
MG recorded 5,009 electric vehicle dispatches in August 2026. This was lower than the 6,004 units registered in August 2025.
The resulting 16.6% decline still left MG in third position, with the brand holding a 13.7% market share.
VinFast Makes a Significant Jump
VinFast was one of the biggest volume movers in August, registering 3,028 units compared with just 61 units in the same month last year.
The increase works out to 4,863.9% YoY, although the percentage is heavily influenced by the low base in August 2025. VinFast nevertheless accounted for 8.3% of the electric passenger vehicle market during the month.
Maruti Suzuki Enters the August EV Table
Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,586 electric vehicle dispatches in August 2026, giving it a 4.3% share of the market.
The corresponding August 2025 dataset shows zero units for the manufacturer, meaning a conventional year-on-year growth percentage cannot be calculated for this period.
Kia Crosses the 1,000-Unit Mark
Kia dispatched 1,198 electric cars in August 2026, compared with 950 units a year earlier.
This represents 26.1% growth, with Kia accounting for 3.3% of total market volumes.
Hyundai Nearly Doubles Its EV Volumes
Hyundai reported 984 electric vehicle dispatches, up from 526 units in August 2025.
The manufacturer therefore recorded 87.1% YoY growth and held a 2.7% market share for the month.
Toyota Records 372 Units
Toyota dispatched 372 electric vehicles during August 2026, giving it 1.0% of the market.
There were no corresponding Toyota EV dispatches in the August 2025 data, so the brand has been classified as new for the year-on-year comparison rather than assigned a percentage growth figure.
Citroen Records Triple-Digit Growth on a Small Base
Citroen’s August 2026 dispatches stood at 61 units, compared with 29 units in August 2025.
The brand therefore registered 110.3% YoY growth, although its overall contribution remained limited at 0.2% market share.
EV Market Nearly Doubles in a Year
The August figures show the continued expansion of India’s electric passenger vehicle market. Total dispatches increased from 19,792 units in August 2025 to 36,593 units in August 2026, translating to 84.9% growth.
Tata and Mahindra together accounted for 66.6% of all electric car dispatches, while the four largest manufacturers—Tata, Mahindra, MG and VinFast—combined for approximately 88.5% of the market.
The August 2026 data therefore reflects both the continued strength of established EV manufacturers and the increasing contribution from newer entrants to India’s electric passenger vehicle segment.
