Mahindra Thar OG vs Maruti Jimny vs Force Gurkha: How India’s Compact Off-Roaders Compare

The arrival of the Mahindra Thar OG has put fresh focus on India’s compact lifestyle SUV segment, where rugged styling, four-wheel-drive capability and recreational appeal often matter as much as everyday practicality.

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha 3-door remain its most direct alternatives, while the Mahindra Thar Roxx and Force Gurkha 5-door offer larger alternatives for buyers who prioritise additional space and easier access to the rear seats.

However, comparing these SUVs purely on price or body style can be misleading. The drivetrain, seating configuration and intended usage can significantly change what each model offers.

Mahindra Thar OG: Entry Price and 4WD Are Two Different Stories

The Thar OG, introduced on September 22, 2026, has a starting price of ₹10.32 lakh. However, the entry-level figure applies to the AXT diesel with rear-wheel drive.

For buyers specifically looking for four-wheel-drive capability, the range starts at ₹15.60 lakh for the LXT petrol manual, while the LXT diesel 4WD manual is priced at ₹16.43 lakh.

These introductory ex-showroom prices apply to deliveries made until November 30, 2026, with customer deliveries scheduled to commence from October 11.

Mahindra has also made several mechanical and equipment changes to the updated Thar, including electric power steering and revised rear suspension.

The equipment varies considerably between versions. Four-wheel-drive variants get features such as an electronic locking differential and terrain modes, while the ZXT trim adds equipment including six airbags, all-disc brakes and frequency-dependent damping.

This makes the price range particularly important when comparing the Thar with its rivals. The RWD version is positioned as a more accessible lifestyle SUV, whereas the 4WD variants are aimed at buyers who specifically want additional off-road capability.

How the Main Rivals Differ

Thar OG RWD3-door, RWDCity use, lifestyle driving and light rough-road useLower entry price and distinctive styling, but no low-range 4WD hardware
Thar OG 4WD3-door, 4WDOff-roading, touring and enthusiast useStrong terrain capability, although rear-seat access remains limited
Maruti Jimny5-door, standard ALLGRIP 4WDDaily driving combined with weekend off-roadingFive-door practicality and compact dimensions, but less power and torque
Force Gurkha 3-door3-door, 4WD with dual differential locksDedicated off-roading and demanding trailsExtensive factory off-road hardware, with a more utilitarian character
Thar Roxx / Gurkha 5-door5-door, RWD or 4WD / 7-seat GurkhaFamily use with off-road capabilityMore passenger-friendly, but larger and heavier than the three-door models

Maruti Jimny Brings Five-Door Practicality

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny takes a somewhat different route within this category. While its five-door layout makes it easier to use as a family vehicle, it retains the fundamental architecture expected from a compact off-roader.

It uses a ladder-frame chassis, rigid axles and ALLGRIP PRO 4WD with low range. Power comes from a 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 104.8 PS and 134.2 Nm. Transmission choices include a five-speed manual and a four-speed automatic, while six airbags are standard across the range.

The Jimny’s biggest distinction is the way it combines genuine 4WD hardware with a relatively compact footprint and five-door body.

For buyers who regularly carry rear passengers, the additional doors can make a significant difference in day-to-day usability. At the same time, those comparing it with the Thar should also consider the difference in engine performance and overall vehicle character.

Force Gurkha 3-Door Focuses on Off-Road Hardware

The Force Gurkha 3-door takes a more hardware-oriented approach. Its body configuration is closer to that of the Thar, while its standard equipment includes features aimed specifically at demanding off-road use.

Force’s published specifications list a 2.6-litre diesel engine developing 140 PS and 320 Nm. The SUV comes with four-wheel drive and mechanical differential locks on both axles.

The Gurkha also gets a factory-fitted snorkel, along with claimed 233mm ground clearance and 700mm water-wading capability.

For enthusiasts who expect to spend considerable time on difficult trails, these features can be important considerations. However, off-road performance is not determined by hardware alone. Tyre selection, terrain, vehicle weight, load and driver skill can all influence how an SUV performs in real conditions.

Thar Roxx and Gurkha 5-Door Add Family-Friendly Alternatives

Buyers who like the idea of an off-road-capable SUV but need greater practicality can look beyond the three-door models.

The Thar Roxx expands the Thar family with a five-door body and offers both RWD and 4WD configurations. This makes it more suitable for buyers who want additional passenger access without giving up the option of four-wheel drive.

The Gurkha 5-door, meanwhile, increases seating capacity to seven, compared with four seats in the three-door version.

The larger SUVs make more sense for buyers who frequently carry passengers or need greater flexibility from their vehicle. However, their larger dimensions and additional weight also make them a different proposition from the smaller three-door lifestyle SUVs.

Which Configuration Makes Sense?

The comparison ultimately depends on how the SUV will be used.

The Thar OG RWD provides the lowest entry point into the new Thar range, while the Thar OG 4WD is aimed at buyers who want the additional hardware for serious off-road use. The Jimny combines five-door convenience with compact dimensions and standard 4WD, while the Gurkha 3-door puts greater emphasis on mechanical off-road equipment.

For buyers with family-oriented requirements, the Thar Roxx and Gurkha 5-door shift the focus towards passenger access and additional space.

Rather than looking at these SUVs as direct substitutes in every situation, the more useful comparison is between their drivetrains, seating layouts, off-road equipment, size and intended usage. Those factors ultimately determine which configuration fits a particular buyer’s requirements.
