India’s three-row passenger vehicle space recorded a strong performance in August 2026, with buyers continuing to show healthy demand for both MPVs and SUVs. The segment registered 86,703 units during the month, compared with 67,875 units in August 2025. This translates into a 27.7% year-on-year increase.
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga continued to dominate the segment, although the Mahindra Scorpio significantly narrowed the gap with a sharp 58.3% annual growth. Mahindra also strengthened its presence with the XUV7XO/XUV700, Bolero and new 9S, giving the automaker four models among the top seven sellers.
Meanwhile, Toyota maintained a broad presence across different price points, while newer entrants such as the Nissan Gravite, MG Majestor and Kia Sorento added further competition.

Ertiga Remains No. 1, But Scorpio Is Closing In
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga retained the top spot with 18,516 units in August 2026. However, its sales were almost flat compared with the 18,445 units recorded a year earlier, resulting in just 0.4% growth.
Even with limited annual growth, the Ertiga remained the segment leader with a 21.4% share.
The bigger story came from the second-placed Mahindra Scorpio. Sales climbed from 9,840 units in August 2025 to 15,576 units, representing a substantial 58.3% increase.
With an 18% segment share, the Scorpio is now much closer to the Ertiga than it was a year ago.
Mahindra Dominates the Upper Half of the Chart
Mahindra had an exceptionally strong month in the three-row category.
The XUV7XO/XUV700 recorded 8,541 units, compared with 4,956 units in the corresponding month last year. Its 72.3% YoY growth was one of the strongest performances among established models.
The Bolero, meanwhile, remained remarkably stable. It sold 8,159 units, up marginally from 8,109 units in August 2025.
The newly introduced Mahindra 9S also made an immediate impact, recording 4,508 units and taking seventh place in the ranking.
As a result, Mahindra accounted for four of the top seven positions in the August sales table.
Toyota Maintains a Strong Three-Row Portfolio
Toyota continued to perform across several sections of the market.
The Innova and Innova Hycross together recorded 8,963 units, making them the third-highest-selling three-row offering. Sales were down 3.7% compared with the 9,304 units sold in August 2025, but the range still held a 10.3% segment share.
At the premium end, the Fortuner registered 3,504 units, up from 2,508 units last year. Its 39.7% annual growth is particularly notable considering its significantly higher positioning compared with mainstream MPVs.
The Rumion recorded an even more dramatic percentage increase, rising from just 68 units last year to 2,396 units in August 2026. This resulted in a reported 3,423.5% YoY increase, although the unusually high percentage is largely a result of the very low base in August 2025.
Kia Carens and Clavis See Lower Volumes
The combined Kia Carens and Clavis tally stood at 6,093 units in August 2026.
That was 10.7% lower than the 6,822 units recorded during the same month last year. Despite the decline, the two models together continued to account for around 7% of the segment.
Kia also added sales from its newer products. The Sorento registered 365 units, while the Carnival recorded 78 units, representing a 56% YoY increase for the latter.
Tata Safari Gains Ground
The Tata Safari delivered a positive performance during August.
Sales increased from 1,489 units in August 2025 to 1,953 units, resulting in 31.2% year-on-year growth.
The Safari accounted for approximately 2.3% of the seven-seater market during the month.
Renault Triber and Hyundai Alcazar Lose Volume
Not every model benefited from the segment’s overall growth.
The Renault Triber recorded 1,536 units, down 17.9% from the 1,870 units sold a year earlier.
The Hyundai Alcazar experienced a steeper decline. Its August sales dropped from 1,187 units in 2025 to 856 units in 2026, representing a 27.9% decline.
The Toyota Vellfire also saw volumes fall, with sales declining 24% to 79 units.
New Models Expand the Three-Row Competition
August also highlighted how quickly the three-row market is expanding.
The Nissan Gravite recorded 1,440 units in its debut period, while the MG Majestor posted 602 units. The new Kia Sorento contributed 365 units, and the Volkswagen Tayron recorded 42 units.
With new products entering different price categories, customers now have more options ranging from practical MPVs to premium SUVs and luxury people movers.
What the August Sales Numbers Tell Us
The overall market delivered a strong 27.7% YoY increase, reaching 86,703 units in August 2026.
However, the growth was not evenly distributed across manufacturers or products.
Mahindra emerged as the biggest growth story, with the Scorpio and XUV7XO/XUV700 recording particularly strong gains. The company’s stable Bolero volumes and the addition of the 9S further strengthened its position.
The Ertiga remains the segment’s best-selling model, but its almost flat growth means Mahindra’s rapidly expanding Scorpio is becoming a much more significant challenger.
Toyota continues to benefit from a broad portfolio covering mainstream MPVs through premium SUVs, while new launches from Nissan, MG, Kia and Volkswagen are making the segment increasingly competitive.
